Print the questions out for the patient to answer with a pen. Click their answers on the computer screen. When you have clicked in all their answers, click on the Calculate button. The scores are displayed and the text below explains their significance. Repeating the questionnaire at a later date showing lower scores can be very reassuring to doctor and patient.

Have you ever got a cholesterol result back and couldn't decide from the result whether to treat or not? One has to consider not just the total cholesterol result but the patient's age, the HDL, the blood pressure, whether they smoke, whether they have diabetes, and the family history. The New Zealand calculator with the coloured squares is one way of doing this.

The following calculator (based on the Framingham data) which uses all the above information (except family history) and tells you the 10 and 5 year risk as well as the exact NNT (number needed to treat). If the NNT is less than 25 you treat, otherwise review when the patient is a bit older. The calculator also displays the 10 year risk if the patient stopped smoking, lowered their BP, lowered their cholesterol or all three. This can be very useful for motivating the patient. The result can be printed out & handed to the patient in the consult.
